Every year young women across the world commemorate and honor their transition into womanhood by having a quinceanera. Historically It is believed that 15 was considered the age that a girl is prepared for marriage and ultimately for motherhood and although nowadays that seems ridiculous it is still a rich and cultural tradition to commemorate a girl transitioning to womanhood. Quinceañeras have since grown very popular here in the United States. I shot Victoria’s quinceanera last week. This is the second quinceanera I have shot for the Enríquez family, a few years ago I photographed Valentina’s gorgeous quinceanera. Victoria looked gorgeous in her custom-made dress, it complemented her very tall slender physique. Like her sister Valentina, Victoria held her quinceanera at St Peter and Paul Church in Wilmington which is absolutely one of the most beautiful churches in southern California. As a matter of fact, it was the first Catholic church built in the area and it is very reminiscent of Roman Catholic churches it has the most dramatic and beautiful lighting. It rained the entire day unfortunately but that didn’t keep us from having fun.

We started the day off at their beautiful family home where Victoria was starting to get ready. She had a beautiful light green quince dress adorned with green and gold embellishments and flowers. She decided to rock her white high top converse underneath her dress and had a beautiful bouquet of greens, purples, pinks, and whites. She had a little tiara headpiece that sparkled in the light. After she was done curling her hair and doing her makeup it was time to head out! The ceremony took place at St Peter and Paul Church in Wilmington, which I mentioned before is absolutely stunning and one of my favorite churches to shoot at. It was right around Christmas time so the church still had Christmas trees and holiday decor up which looked really pretty in the photos. After the ceremony we shot family portraits outside of the church under the arches.

Afterward, Veronica, Victoria’s mother was kind enough to rent a couple of hours at the Maya hotel in order to shoot the creative formals which we would normally shoot outside. Totally worth the investment, especially because it was pouring rain outside. Her and her older sister Valentina, whose quince I had just shot a few years prior, took some silly photos and we took some solo pictures of Just Victoria for a while. Even though it was raining I really wanted to get some pictures of the outside area because it was gorgeous so yes I did make her run around in the rain a little but it was fun and totally worth it! We took a few photos of her with her friends by the Jeep they had rented for them.

After creative formals at the Maya hotel, we headed straight to the Betty Reckas cultural center in Long Beach… Where mariachi waited for us in their gorgeous embroidered outfits. The Mariachi was amazing. There was lots of fun to be had and although there were not a lot of the typical dances and formalities that a lot of quinceaneras partake in there was still plenty of partying and fun. Her family read a few prepared speeches and her and her father danced to a beautiful song and they both cried. It was so sweet. We shot the details at the reception including custom chocolates at every table, the florals, the head table, the 5, yes 5 cakes, and custom sunglasses for guests. Which was funny considering the rain outside. My favorite part of the reception was definitely the live painting. They hired the same artist who painted Valentina’s quincenera to paint Victoria’s quince and it was gorgeous.
