Photography Permits for a Descanso Gardens Photoshoot
📷 Before You Shoot: Reservation & Policies
📌 Reservation & Permit Required
-
Any posed photography — whether professional, amateur, or family sessions — requires a booked permit and fee prior to arriving.
-
This includes engagement sessions, maternity, couples, or styled shoots.
💰 Permit Fees (Typical):
-
Groups of 1–5 — ~$300 (although when I looked at my clients receipt she had paid $500.00 possibly for more time? The $300.00 may be a per hour charge)
-
Groups of 6–10 — ~$400
-
Larger groups are priced higher and require coordination with staff.
Key Rules to Know Before Your Session
✔ Tripods are ok as long as they don’t block pathways, flower beds, or seating. THEY DO NOT ALLOW OFF CAMERA FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY, NO LIGHT STANDS. I had to leave my light stand and that does make a big difference is the look of the photography. I think this location is beautiful as is with no additional light but I always prefer to add off camera flash to fill in and remove weird color casts.
✔ No costume changes on site — clients need to arrive ready. My client changed in the restroom right outside and this did not seem to be a problem.
✔ Props such as signs, balloons, chairs, musical instruments, drones, or flowers brought in from outside are prohibited.
✔ Photography inside buildings (like galleries or the Boddy House) is not permitted.
Best Locations for a Descanso Gardens Photoshoot
, 🪴 Great Spots to Photograph
Descanso spans 150 acres of diverse settings, meaning each session can feel unique: It’s big but not as big as you think. Most of the areas or not suitable for photography. When you look at a map you will see that the best places to shoot will be definitely walkable and not over whelming
-
Center Circle: Nice sculptural areas to photograph.
-
California Garden: Open lawns with sculptural plantings. Beautiful areas with nice structures.
-
Japanese Garden: Tranquil ponds, bridges, and serene framing. Small and cute to photograph
-
Camelia Forest: Textured backgrounds with dappled sunlight. Don’t venture off road too much, stay near the pathways, it’s pretty dense with foliage.
-
Rose Garden: Classic and timeless blooms for romantic portraits. My favorite area, open and allows beautiful sunlight in.
- Dont bother shooting at the lake I couldn’t really find a great location to photograph where the lake really stood out.
- One negative about Descanso Gardens is that it is pretty closed in and has alot of shade. There are not alot of areas that have natural sunlight peaking through. I love the look of warm sunset light and always schedule my photography sessions near sunset becuase that is the best time of day to photograph, as most of us know. The Rose Gardens offer beautiful open areas to photograph in. Plus there are gorgeous structures like benches and gazebos.
🌤️ Timing & Light Tips
Light is everything in outdoor photography. Here’s how to make the most of Descanso’s varied terrain:
☀ Morning & Golden Hour:
-
Softer, warmer light.
-
Fewer visitors and minimal crowds.
- Although always dark at any time of day
☀ Midday:
-
Deeper shadows under tall trees — use reflectors or shaded compositions. I would avoid shooting here at this time of day
-
Great for moody, dramatic portraits… if you are into that, but remember they do not allow off camera flash. Planning ahead is essential for a smooth and stress-free Descanso Gardens photoshoot.

I photographed this in the Descanso Gardens Parking lot and removed the cars and distractions. They do not allow off camera flash photography inside the park (and in the parking lot_ We were scolded, tee hee hee, when I shot this. Lighting plays a huge role in a successful Descanso Gardens photoshoot.
