So this is it! You found the one!. You know you want to spend the rest of your life with this person and you want to start off on the right foot. You want to plan a perfect marriage proposal, something beautiful, something sentimental and of course all of this needs to be planned as a surprise. I’m sure you probably have no idea where to start but here are 10 hints and tips to help you plan the perfect proposal.
#1 know your partner: before planning the perfect proposal make sure you understand your partner’s preferences. You don’t want to invite her friends and family if you know that your partner is introverted and doesn’t like to be the center of attention. You want to invite friends and family if you know that your partner is very close to their family and can’t imagine A moment like this without their loved ones close by. Is your partner into nature or are they a city person. These things will make the proposal more unique to your partner and what your partner loves!
#2 choose the right location: the location of the proposal can make a huge difference in the overall experience. Think about places that are special to you guys as a couple and hold a significance for you and your partner. If you don’t have any locations that are particularly sentimental to both of you your photographer can help you choose a stunning photography location depending on your needs. As stated above if your partner is a city person then your photographer can help you choose an amazing location with beautiful lighting and epic buildings. If your partner is into nature then your photographer can help you choose a gorgeous natural environment with beautiful lighting and scenic vistas.
#3 make it a surprise: while it’s important to know your partner’s preferences, it’s also important to keep the proposal a surprise! Think of creative ways to throw them off track and make the moment even more special. In this proposal Arthur, my client wanted to surprise his fiance, Adriana with the perfect proposal. He told her that he wanted family portraits taken since they had a baby 7 months ago and hadn’t had any photographs taken yet. So it was perfect Arthur and Adriana both dressed up.. and we spent the majority of the time photographing them for their family portraits and then ended the photo shoot with the proposal. It was perfect as I didn’t have to hide in the bushes and I was able to pick the perfect lighting and the perfect background for their magical proposal and I was front and center to be able to capture all of the emotion, the laughter, the tears and the love after Arthur proposed.
#4 get the timing right: timing is everything when it comes to a proposal. Consider factors like the time of day, the day of the week, and the season. You want to choose a time when your partner is relax and not distracted by other commitments. You don’t want to pop the question when work is really stressful! Make sure it’s good timing for both of you and in regards to photography time sunset is always best.
#5 involve family and friends: if your partner is close to their family and friends, consider involving them in the proposal. This can add an extra element of surprise and make the moment even more memorable! if your partner is not close to their family and you think that they may appreciate a more intimate moment then disregard this tip and keep your perfect proposal more intimate. Knowing your partner and their needs is important for your proposal.
#6 hire a photographer or videographer: a professional photographer or videographer can capture the moment and create a lasting memory. Considering hiring someone to capture the proposal from a distance or to create a cinematic video. Of course this is one of the most important parts! I’m not being biased. Nothing is going to be better than a professional camera and a professional photographer. Your best friend or cousins cell phone is never going to do your proposal justice. Grainy footage that at some point is going to be blown up to a photograph is never going to look as good as an artist capturing the moment with sharp and crisp clear lenses.
#7 choose the right ring: the engagement ring is a symbol of your commitment so make sure you choose the right one. Consider your partner style preferences and budget when selecting a ring. Make sure that you check with your sweetheart and find out what your partners’ style of favorable engagement ring looks like. I’m sure if you are planning on proposing you guys have already had conversations about rings and engagement and wedding styles so make sure to write down that information so you always have it handy when you need it.
#8 plan something were you and your partner have to dress up: trust me I have shot lots of proposals and I have had people show up in their sweats thinking this was a casual movie night. There’s nothing wrong with sweats, but I think every person wants to look their best and showing up with a ponytail and no makeup on to a night where you are thinking you’re just going to watch a movie it’s not going to look as great as a perfect outfit to match your perfect proposal. As I stated earlier my client and I planned a family portraits and that was a great excuse. Telling your partner that you want to take them out to a beautiful dinner is also a great excuse for dressing up. Tell your partner that you want them to look they’re absolute best, maybe get them a gift certificate for a spa day the day before or a gift certificate for a mani and pedi or to get their hair blown out or maybe to get their hair and makeup professionally done. Whatever it is, make sure that you and your partner look you’re absolute best for you’re perfect proposal!
#9 plan a special activity afterwards: after the proposal, plan a special activity to celebrate! This could be a dinner out at your favorite restaurant or a restaurant you have been wanting to go to. Maybe, you can go away for a weekend or plan a little mini vacation. Especially after you are dressed up and looking your best for your perfect proposal, it’s great to go out on the town and look absolutely adorable!
#10 practice makes perfect: practice your proposal speech and the logistics of the proposal to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Plan something beautiful to say when you propose and practice it a few times before the actual moment. This will help you feel more confident and ensure that the moment is perfect.
