You’re recently engaged. You’ve started the wedding planning. Now, one of your first big decisions is choosing when you should get married. Picking a date is essential before even booking photography, venue, catering, and everything you need to look into for your big day. There are so many factors that go into deciding what time of year is right for you so I’ve broken down what I believe are the biggest pros and cons to getting married in each season. I’ve been in the wedding business as a photographer for over 30 years so I can tell you I’ve seen it all. I hope my guide can help you guide which season you’re gonna choose to finally say “I do”!

Best weather –  late summer and early fall (September/October) are the most popular months for weddings.
The transition from summer into autumn is peak comfort weather, not too hot or too cold. The weather is also more predictable than in other seasons with low to no chance of rain or storm. This is a big factor to account for especially if you’re considering an outdoor wedding. Late summer and early fall also present more opportunities for beautiful photography and floral arrangements. If you love all things pumpkin spice, dried flowers, and fall colors this is the time for you. It’s also the best time to have an outdoor ceremony and reception because you won’t have to invest too much in making sure your guests are comfortable;  as opposed to in summer with air conditioning or winter with blankets and heaters. It’s also great to not have to be stuck between choosing an indoor or outdoor venue, depending on the weather. Another positive is that in autumn there are a lack of bugs which is great for outdoor weddings. You don’t realize how big of a nuisance bugs are until you book a summer wedding and mosquitoes are eating your guests alive and flies are circling your food. A downside is that it can get pricey for venue and catering, since it’s peak wedding season and you’re competing with everyone else, they usually charge premium rates. To summarize, autumn is a beautiful time to get married and there’s a reason it’s the most popular choice for engaged couples. The aesthetic, florals, weather, and so much more are great reasons to pick an autumn wedding but they might not be for everyone, especially for brides on a budget.

Off-season but budget-friendly- Winter
If you want cooler weather but not the price tag that comes along with it, winter is the way to go. Personally, I love winter weddings. In winter you can do a beautiful theme, you can get dried flowers or an all-white winter wonderland, you can accessorize with an elegant fur coat, and the possibilities of creativity are endless. You may be  a bit cold but I would still argue that that’s better than sweating your makeup off and ruining your hair in hot weather. Plus, if you’re wearing a thick heavy dress or a tuxedo you’ll be more comfortable in it and not sweaty. A negative might be that guests may not want to layer and their outfits might be affected. Another negative is, of course, the weather and its unpredictability. It may rain on your big day or be windy so make sure to plan accordingly and DRESS WARM. Also, heat lamps in winter are almost a necessity if anytime is going to be spent outdoors. Another negative may be conflicting schedules since winter is the season of holidays. People may already have trips booked or people coming to visit or already set plans by the time you send out your save the dates and the holidays are the busiest time of year. Winter weddings can be magical, budget friendly, super comfortable and chilly, and in Southern California snow is not a concern so we can take advantage of that perk. Although it might rain, you can always have an indoor reception and it won’t be an issue but if you are set an an outdoor reception Winter might not be the option for you.

Best for floral arrangements and vibrant colors- Spring
If one of your biggest needs for your wedding is flowers then spring might be the option for you. Many of the most beautiful flowers are only in bloom during spring and if you’re looking for bright and vibrant flowers springtime brings them in abundance. Let’s say your favorite flower is peonies and you want them in your bouquet but you’ve decided on an autumn or summer wedding; you won’t be able to find peonies anywhere. That can be a make or break for some brides. Although there are pros such as being less expensive than fall, beautiful florals, and amazing photo opportunities, there are also some cons. The biggest con would be the unpredictable weather. Predictability is a necessity, especially if any part of your wedding is going to be outdoors. In Spring, especially in California, the weather can range from a warm day to a thunderstorm. Since couples usually have to solidify their dates at least a year in advance this can bring a lot of stress to the planning process. The weather can forecast certain patterns but you won’t really know what will happen until a few days before to even the morning of. If it’s pouring rain you’ll also miss out on photography opportunities we would’ve otherwise gotten to take advantage of if the weather had been better. Even if you’re going to have an indoor wedding and reception photography should always be taken into consideration because most photographers like to shoot formal photos outside. It would be sad to not be able to take your dream photos and spend the money on a photographer and/or videographer for the weather to impact your photography time. We also have such little time in the day where we can take photos of the bride, groom, and bridal party that it needs to be ensured that we can shoot somewhere nice and fairly dry. And along with winter, spring is on the much cheaper side of the wedding season. There are pros and cons to a spring wedding, but it is the season of love and rebirth so a beautiful spring day might be the perfect day for your needs, just make sure to pack an umbrella.

A good option but the timing can get tricky- Summer (June gloom or sweltering heat).
If your ceremony and reception will be indoors and with (GOOD) air conditioning then there isn’t much to worry about except for outside photography time. Although, many couples opt for outdoor weddings and give their guests handheld fans as wedding favors. This is an option but you should be informed and have a backup plan if the venue’s air conditioning goes out or plan for fans to be brought outside to an outdoor venue. You can’t imagine how many hot summer weddings I’ve shot where the air conditioning stopped working or wasn’t strong enough to cool all the guests. Sometimes guests won’t dance or will even leave early if your reception is unbearably hot. With a planner, you can look at weather trends for the dates/months you’re considering and try to be the best prepared to avoid extreme weather conditions. It’s also a great time for beach or destination weddings because sunshine is a guarantee and the coast is always cooler.  As discussed earlier, the later in Summer you chose the more expensive it may be so make sure to take that into consideration. What many people do to lower venue and catering prices is to book their weddings on a Thursday or Friday but be warned that people may not be able to get time off work or other obligations on a weekday. Also make sure to have makeup on hand for touch ups or even hire your makeup artist to stay a bit longer throughout the day because you never know how your makeup is gonna look after taking photos for a few hours on a hot summer day. My Photoshop skills work wonders but if you still want your guests to see you look your best, it would be a smart idea. You might say you won’t need it but I wish I could tell you how many times I’ve seen makeup melt off of brides and bridesmaids and they are never happy about it. Overall, Summer is a good option but be prepared for extreme weather conditions, especially in So-Cal.
